Title: Something to do...
Post by: eddy-r3 on August 29, 2013, 09:22:15 PM
So, landed myself some nice wood, and after being inspired elsewhere, set out to make something. And this was the result. After using a Sig 13a, this thing kicks like mad, short throw button (approx 1mm) can be stood upright, 510 connector, spalted beech wood, stainless and brass bits here and there. At the moment its an ally top cap, but will be changed for a SS when i make another. This was more of a see how it works kind of affair!

And im quite pleased with it i think :) its a day to day device since its better than the 13a i was using! LOL :)

Thanks guys :)

Like i said, it is VERY rough around the edges, and will be a hybrid once i finished the atty! lol but for 2nite a quick 510 will do! :)

I should add more "WIP" images to be honest, but here are a few anyway! :)

The mangled piece is what happens when you grip something too lose, and touch it with a tool....not good!

ALWAYS BE SAFE WHEN WORKING WITH MACHINERY! (Seriously) :)

Im not a professional, but im safe.

Thanks Zarf/Pyr0

Got a few other things in mind to be honest, so this was just a "tester" more than anything to see if the concept would be doable, in terms of my skill level, and it appears so! :)

Will keep this post upto date :)

Title: Re: Something to do...

yes, please keep this updated.
I particularly like how one you might play with the wood grain for effect.
I mean: depending on how you initially select and re-size the piece, you could exploit the grain's patterns.
I suspect that, structurally, you'll probably have more success if the axis along which you mill is similar to the natural growth axis of the original tree's wood, but perhaps re-sizing your workpiece so that these axes vary by, say, 15 - 45 degrees, may result in some interesting looks.

What special treatment does wood need, to best be used for this ?
(I know sweet fanny adams about wood ...)

Me to Zarf, so your guess it as good as mine! Ive used Kiln dried Spalted beech for that one, but have many other wood blanks on the way, im planning on doing another beech one, but staining it, and adding gloss Varnish to finish it off, that should protect it against hands/oils/grime etc! :)

Thanks Bob :D got some Walnut on the way, along with Ebony, Babinga and some other woods......i also have the atty in mind to.... :)

I picked up a Bubinga Touchwood at Vapefest - it's lovely wood:

Ian (Mr Touchwood)'s top tip is to use teak oil to improve the tactile feel and bring out the grain...

And, nice one Jaded...Lovely colour and grain  ;D

ANYWAY, im finishing off these drip tips, then ill get on and make something that id be proud to put my name to, post some pics, and if anyone is interested, id be happy to make them :) Hybrid genny et all

Many thanks for that pic of your  'Bubinga' Touchwood, Jaded. Looks excellent.
(If not too much trouble, could you indicate its approximate dimensions, please?  height, width, broadest depth, depth along firing button axis...)
ps. That atomiser/adapter you show on it looks fine, too. Which ones were you using in that pic?

http://touchwood-ecigs.com/ ---> select 'photos' page for more pics showing how Touchwood uses an external brass 'skeleton' to remove all structural stress from the wood. Simple. Elegant. Wood. (I like elegant. I like wood. I love simple.)

Sadly, I suspect that the Touchwoods cannot be 'kicked' - as I see is no way to ground the 'kick'. (a small metal sleeve under, and linked to, the 510 connector might address that, I think)
Yes, I know I said 'I love simple' and then go and harp on about a 'kick'. The "reason" for my liking the 'kick' is that I find I get a burnt taste from many e-juices on low-res coils, so limiting system power works - for me (along with avoiding building sub-1.4ohm coils, too). More importantly, I've found that I deplete my 18350 cells too far (sometimes down to 2.5v - which is not good) on my Sig8w in its small config. The Sig8W in smallest mode is my preferred mod when out, because of  my hands' limitations. (I can't really 'do' bottom-button mods above 18500 size)

Anyway, this has forced me into starting a genesis atty....wish me luck. May not be on chat this eve, if i am, chances are things didnt work out too well, alternatively, it could be the dogs and ill be very happy! LOL :D

remember the discussion about removing the "point on the centre post"? Yeah well, i did, whilst it was in situ, melted the threads on the insulator and now wont make contact with the 510 connector. Dumb ass thing to do really, but thats what happens when you're an impatient bugger like me! :) lol oops.

so this is where i am, may not look like much, but it is a lot of work to get here.

LOL

realised, that because of the wood, the mod is 24mm diameter (instead of the preferred 22mm just due to how its made and battery sizes etc) ANYWAYS, i have made a 22mm atty (at least started), looking at some 24mm glass now though, so could be some alterations down the line!

:) I started @ 4:30pm today, so 4 hours or so to get here.

Woah Woah Woah, i never said i wouldnt, but :

a) I have no idea how to do it
b) I have no idea how to do it
c) If you want to tell me how you'd ideally want one setup, i can certainly have a go, since id like one myself! I know the centre post is the positive, and i pressume its just an extension of the 510 centre post, and the negative post, is essentially the same as a genny, just raised? Is that about right? :)

Thanks Fiona, been vaping on it for the last few hours....managed to bodge myself a glass tank together using a bench grinder and some patience! :)

It'll do until i get some done properly. Got a few tweaks and alterations i need to do, sort the top cap out mainly as ive not cut it deep enough and does catch a little on the wick, easy fix though to be honest, off to do that, then ill continue vaping it, ill take a few more images once the mod is finished (varnish is drying) just need to make a button for it.

Should name this thread "Hybrid in 3 days or less" lol :)

b) No drawings or real planning
and
c) Its all been done on a whim and a prayer! Even had tears over this thing.

Thanks guys been updated a bit since then, remade the atomiser so it now covers the exposed wood on the top, and again, redone the button.....which, im going to redo again anyway! LOL Simple things make for important changes and all that! :) lol

Tempted to do a 24mm version so its all flush as opposed to the step between mod/atty, although it is growing on me somewhat....

Still waiting some clean cut glass and white orings, hopefully will be here this week :D and i can call it a day on that particular one, and replicate it a few times, perhaps 5 at most, get them engraved and numbered and that'll be that! :)

Thanks Evil-C,

Im in the process of getting a "series" of these, each with respective names relating to the wood used.

Walnut - The Brunette
Yew - The Blonde
Solid Brass - The Rogue

Any suggestions or comments welcomed. Ill be doing between 5-10 of each, all having a serial number on at a price to be thought about. Timescales, a while yet! Once i have one of each made, ill post pics up, each mod will be based around the same idea, just aesthetically different :)
Title: Re: Something to do...

Thanks Evil-C, was thinking of having the logo on the main wood section, branded/braised/burnt on, and then the serial number either on the top cap, or the bottom button outer ring.....but again, open to suggestions! :D

Could even leave the logo out completely and have the serial on the wood as suggested, what are peoples thoughts on "logos on mods"?

Awesome stuff Eddy. I like the Faith and Hope. Not so sure about the word "chance" tho

Wouldn't braising stuff onto the wood risk being rubbed off or at least lose its definition with prolonged handling? I don't know anything about this stuff so soz if a stoopid question

I reckon number somewhere on the metal base myself. But yep, looking brilliant. How good are they to vape?

Are your mods 'Jackal' as in the dog?
Title: Re: Something to do...
Post by: eddy-r3 on September 05, 2013, 10:56:25 AM
Hi Fiona, yes indeed! :)

Well, it was going to be Faith, Hope & Chalice, but we already have a Chalice so that was out of the question, and Chance popped into my head! Another word for Chance?

The serial numbers will be on the SS part of the base as i think thats the best place for it, with regard a "brasied logo rubbing off" it could probably be the case to be honest, although if it was a "deep" braise it should be more hardwearing i think (hope!)

As for how they vape, ive used a handfull of devices, nothing overly expensive mind you and it keeps up, if not better and is my current "goto device".

I used an aluminium mod and was wowed by how good it was in terms of "kick" lol so wanted to replicate it in a manner and design that suited me more than anything and this was the result, no diagrams or designs, just stood at a lathe and saw what happened! LOL :D So yeah pretty good vape really, but as Scott would say "its all down to the way its setup rather than the device itself!", there are a few "teething" troubles that i need to sort out, but other than that, working brilliantly :)

The Trials and Tribulations of making a mod...

So, today i recieved some new orings, white, red and blue ones, in 2 sizes, 9/16" and 5/8"

I opted for the 5/8" as these seemed to be the better fit, so set out to recut my oring grooves, went well, cut fine, tested glass, cracked....anyway, cut another length, ground it down, recut oring groove to allow a little more room, overcut it, too loose. So, had to make another top section for the atomiser, came out great, drilled holes for wick, negative and fill hole, tapped the negative hole, all good. Cut oring grooves tested a tank, cracked, ran out of glass tubing.

I had some off cuts of glass, so i could use these just to test, recut oring groove and ended up going too deep and cutting into the wicking hole, through the piece in the bin, walked away from my lathe for the day. Furious, frustrated and ready to throw the lot up the wall.

Tips - Dont buy a lathe and make a mod, it'll ruin your life. You'll sit and think about it, day in, day out, it'll keep you up at night, and even when you have one that works, you still wont be happy and want to alter it and set out to get better, only to ruin any further advances in production.

Ordered more tubing should be here tomorrow, along with some smaller orings, so i dont have to cut the grooves as deep. I have over 100 color orings now, in various sizes, if anyone wants some, let me know. Not sure if they'd be any good to anyone though as the sizes arent standard really, but again, im sure they'd fit somethings! :)

Moral of the story - When annoyed, fed up and ready to throw the towel in, dont get down about it, take 5mins, revaluate the situation, laugh at pathetic people and carry on....

perfection is gonna demand the making of a few mistakes along the way - you'll learn and gather experience from the occasional mishaps, but the eventual turn out will be better for it.

Thanks Ged, its such a bummer and real downer when **** goes wrong, lol spend hours stood there, for one thing to ruin it.....in a matter of seconds, my Dad always said "Measure twice cut once" it makes sense.....lol :)

Ill carry on tomorrow, got some other "easier" bits to make, like some nice brass buttons in the meantime, i have the mod "tubes" made up and ready, they're a joy to make, ally is like button, and wood is fun :D lol so i can get those bits finished, and start making the atomiser bases and the packaging! (CANT WAIT TO DO THE BOXES FOR THEM!) oooosh so elegant (at least i hope anyway)

Thats my problem, it has to be right, else its not worth doing at all.....lol and its taking a lot of time and effort to get it right....

The one i had finished, photographed and used for the week was good, really good, but the damn orings killed it! WHY OH WHY DID I BOTHER?! LMFAO

Ahh well, onward an upward, oh and just to throw a spanner in the works, had an email from glass company saying i missed todays shipment so wont recieve until monday....not cool man, not cool....

Ended up taking a few snaps along the way, and didnt realise that i took a gem of a picture (at least IMO) im not photographic in the slightest, although a designer my photography skills are quite lacking! BUT, i have to say im pleased with this and it was completely accidental! :D

This has not been photoshopped at all, other than cropping a little and adding my logo! :) Its now my desktop background image.

Oh, the mods...yeah broke my last glass tank today, dropped it, not impressed. Refined the button mechanism and design, and also made a start on the 510 mods. So yeah kind of a good productive day in one respect, but ive been demoted to an RSST! :( lol

Thanks Funky, i had to make something, i have a Sigelei 13a (Which i must add, is pretty dreadful!) And after losing my last glass tank i had to resort to an RSST, and wanted something nice.
I did have a previous 510 mod i made, but was a bit of a chunk, which the wood had cracked on, and now "Hoping" that ive got the 22mm mods sorted, i had to make myself something good. So that what todays task! And im pleased, button throw isnt even 1mm, its soft enough to be nice, but stiff enough to not fire when its stood up.

The 510 connector is currently Ally, which will be replaced with SS/Brass etc when i get round to it, i didnt finish up till late, and was ready for a rest, so threw something together to get me through the night! :)

With the time and energy you have put into your mods, I'm sure they will vape very nicely.  I have a few DIDs and a month ago I cracked two tanks - as punishment to myself I replaced the last cracked tank with an original SS tank (even though I still have one clear tank in reserve), could you do the same with SS when your short on glass ?
Title: Re: Something to do...
Post by: eddy-r3 on September 15, 2013, 10:28:16 PM

BUT i have to be honest, i have an almost hatred feeling toward SS tanks, even for testing purposes! LOL :D Good suggestion though capt, but ill hang on until i get my glass ones! :D

SS tanks will also be very useful for blokes that work physical jobs. (You know, the ones we all depend on, but take for granted ...?)

And a little ball bearing inside, when rattled, makes for a fuel gauge...  :)

ps. love the success you've had in making these at 22mm... (I didn't want to say that "you'd cracked it" ... :D )

Title: Re: Something to do...
Post by: Capt12B on September 20, 2013, 04:35:12 AM
I had an idea for genny top caps that might work. On my DIDs the top cap screws on- I like this because it allows me to confidently pick up my mod by the top with no fear of having the mod fall to the ground. On my gennys that are just held in place by "o" rings I have made that mistake which resulted in a cracked tank grrr. With just "o" rings I also have to make sure the air hole is aligned. My idea was to have a notched 1/4 turn cap in which you pushed on the cap and give it a slight turn till the notch locked in place aligning the air hole and preventing the cap from accidentally coming off.  Just a thought, not sure how difficult that would be to build.

Thanks guys, unfortunately, the photo hasnt done the wood any justice! LOL blaming my photography skills here, not my design skills. I can bring out the grain by altering the contrast, but you get a lot of white cast then and it looks pants! LOL

Ill take another and post that up :)
Title: Re: Something to do...
Post by: Nick Brown on September 21, 2013, 03:46:38 PM
No not too blingy at all. I think it's a nice balance between the 3 colours and imo can only improve as the brass takes on it's own patina.
But then, I like brass :D

Wow simply stunning is the Lupus the model formally known as hope? Just looks amazing great effort and keep up the good work mate.

Im afraid Evil-C its....not :( Lupus is made from Wenge, which is an african hardwood, and horrible to work with, it turns ok, but the dust can be dangerous (cause drowziness and breathing difficulties!) and its quite hard to get hold of to, not to mention its oily so messy to! Prospect of making some in the future, very likely, along with a sister one called Lupus Arctos (White Wolf) made from the opposite wood of Black Wenge, White Wenge, which is a yellow wood, with White grain (similar to Black wenge - brown wood/black grain).

Hope (now known as Adustus (Thanks Scott)) is made from Black Walnut, which with use/age and the daily grind takes on its own darkening and ages itself. (See snaps below of before/after as examples). So each mod, really, becomes your own, taking in dirt, oils and just general wear from your hands and tainting the wood in an individual way (in a good way no doubt!).

My Adustus was in the garage with me, as a work-horse and took on a really nice dark tone, and a few others have darkened to, just from sitting on the shelf!

The Brass will patina nicely, some it looks great on, others, not soooo good. For example IMO on the darker woods/mods the brighter polished brass is a contrast, as opposed to the lighter woods, where the darker patnia'd brass then becomes the contrast. Again, quite a personal opinion and flavour really, each to their own and what not!

I just want to use it now lol but im still without glass, and have lots of bits and pieces ready to make/put together once i collect my glass! I have another 4 lengths of tubing to be cut, ground, polished and etched, but plain glass will do for now! :)

Left - 3-4 week old Adustus (Formally Hope)
Right - Fresh cut/varnished tube (2-3 days ago)

So you can see, just how much they darken after a few weeks! :)

that looks excellent, eddy-r3.

Have you made any "kick-rings" (sounds almost crude, but I think you know what I mean) for these ?
(I recall you having asked for a kick, recently...)

Hi Zarf, no, but ill be making some 18500 tubes in the future :)

looking good Eddy

Thanks Bob, i to prefer the darker woods, just think they have a spot more class IMO. And the brass just finishes it off nicely i think! :)

Yeah, that looks sweeeeeeeeet! :D

Thanks Scott :)

Last one then, happy now!

Button - Sorted, the design is good for me i think, thick, chunky and really does feel nice.

Leaking Center Post - Sorted, the old insulator was a dreadful press fit, which fell out, hence the leak. So, threaded a piece of PTFE and got that in there, running some tests now, which basically means im vaping it. If this turns out ok, ill get the others done and sent out to the "reviewers" and we'll go from there!

But i think the design, im happy with it now, and how it performs to! :)

Thanks guys, its surprising just how much development goes into these things.

Along the last 4 months ive learnt a few valuable lessons for making ecigs :

1) Although in essence, its a tube with bits stuck on, making it look good is hard.
2) In reality, they're easy to make and work, but to make it work "well" is another thing...
3) Never underestimate the amount of time a "button" can take to make
4) When in doubt, leave it alone for a bit!
5) Don't rush things. (Most important thing here)
6) Don't "press fit" something thats loose in the first place, and wonder why it leaks.

:D

Eddy
you have walked the rice paper without breaking it.
you have snatch the pebble from my hand.
you will carry the hot cauldron branding your forearms with the mark of the micrometer and the cutting tool.
you will walk through the door to quench your skin in the cold snow.
you have earned your freedom and the right to be called a mod maker.

 :o :P :D ;D :P ;) :)

I've been following your adventures quietly, and although i have never been into gennys, I very much desire one of your mods. You are a true craftsman sir.

Needs re-brushing, but you get the idea....

18500 hybrid using 18350 + Kick. Dead good.

Single coil, 1.5ohm @ 10w with some Humano HermanoRubio from T-Juice, 26mg, dont think i want much more to be honest. LOL
