Title: Unnecessary Drama
Post by: love-to-vape on March 30, 2013, 01:42:57 AM
Just a word of warning to people if you thinking off going in chat

I went in there tonight and just because the colour off my hair "user name EMTRONEA" thought  it would be funny making comment(s) about it
which I don't find it funny what so ever
So what am trying to say if your Black/Asian or what ever race/hair colour you are prepared for comments from him
I will not be going into live chat again

 >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

ADMIN EDIT - PLEASE READ

a guy entered the chat room and a person asked "are you ginger?"......the offended person then left the chat room

that is all that happened, nothing more, nothing less and quite why that has been tied in with warnings of racism defies all logic and sense  ???

i realise you may be upset by Emtronea asking if your hair is ginger, but im not sure it is akin to racism bud :-\

ultimately, he did only ask "OMG are you ginger" ... he never went any further than that one throwaway question.

I guess it's not so throwaway if you've spent a lifetime hearing it and taking both physical and verbal abuse for it.

As a teacher, I thought such prejudice stopped at the end of the school career and I was very pleased after having to deal so often with bullied kids. I thought ginger jokes were just that - jokes.

But in four years of being with someone red haired I've come to realise that those who get angry at the jokes aren't being unduly insensitive. When you see your fella take a punch outside a bar out of nowhere with the words 'you ginger b*****rd' you start to realise that maybe the jokes aren't funny, even when intended to be.

When people are sensitive about something there's usually a good reason.

Couldn't comments about people's hair/skin/race/weight/age etc be left out of an opening greeting with a stranger in a chat room, just so as not to confuse people on whether its a joke or not  :)

where someone likens a question to racism, they indirectly accuse every bystander of doing a disservice by their passive attendance ... there was no nastiness in comment, only one very simple and direct question.

Wasn't it a web cam chat?

it was on chat ... i have the question recorded ... it was a simple innocent throwaway comment and i might add, a significantly less offensive comment than unduly calling someone a racist.

My dearly beloved said 'It's a load of f***ing b****cks' which about sums it up lmao, but as a rather unremarkable human being who neatly blends in to the world, I don't have much practice in putting forward a valid case... but the following link is a good p.o.v. of it

On a personal note I don't think I'd have the guts to joke about them until I knew him or her well enough to know they weren't going to get bothered by it ;)

where someone invokes racism with zero ground other than to enforce their point, i do feel the accuser should consider their reasoning ... the question was simply a question. the interpretation of said question, was never invitation to become accusation of atrocities above what was asked.

So am I right if I went into chat and said to a member who is big "are you fat"
I think NOT

then you think wrong unfortunately ... the difference though is that we might rarely see anyone go so far as post public outrage and non associated accusation.

It wasn't a question. It was a statement.

With respect to the racism comment, we might all be slowly melding into one big genetic mix as the genetic pool becomes bigger but the expression of genes, and race intertwine. It's too deep to argue in a thread and subjective to a degree but subjectively I find comments about something genetic to be linked inherently with the genes you express...

it remains more offensive to wrongly accuse than to ask a question ... be it statement or question, it never required any such degree of response.

Ho hum... I wish! I think I'd be extremely touchy if I'd been beaten up more than once for being red haired though. It does sum up as being that bad for some people with red hair. But I can see your side of the coin as well. It's difficult...

Clearly people commenting think they're unique in being part of a bit of banter in chat.

So I'm just gonna list what people get slated for in chat.

Emtronea - Coming up with the most wibble comments anywhere and bad djaying.
Itsmeitis - Being Short & having a face that fits a thousand modified pictures.
Stevemontuno - looking stoned (have you seen his video reviews?)
Me - being a gayer
Scott Bonner - Being tall and from Essex
Rocc - Being American
Wayne - Being tall
tripodbeatz - being fat and breaking things
Cerberus - looking like eminem
funkybunch - his accent
Dazz - being ginger
Nosmo - being drunk
Wolfkitch - Ewok
justincase - well he's a scum lord.
wyrm1969 - being welsh

..............

I could go on there are lots more. It's par for the course of being in chat, and yet all those I've listed are regular users. Meaning they come back, see the useful and funny side of chat and roll with it.

If you don't like something say so, in chat to the person, most of the time they'll stop. Yes I've seen this happen, between 2 of the members listed above. They still talk, they still both come in chat.

Seriously, chill out about it, come back n see us. xxx

Just had this discussion in the kitchen... I can see what's trying to be said.

You would not say 'omg you're black' because it's racist. But it's okay to say 'omg you're ginger' because its not classed as racism.

So, you would never say 'omg you're black' even as a joke even though saying 'omg you're ginger' is just as hurtful, yet not construed as being racist even though it's a comment about genetic heritage in the same way. Albeit without the same degree of 'history' but it still has terrible undertones of bullying, physical violence etc.

We are getting bad in the UK for what they call 'gingerism' and there are no Martin Luther Kings, just Chris Evans (sorry, feeble joke).

It's actually a good point though!

love-to-vape just said 'they don't f***king get it 'cos they don't have f***ing ginger hair'. I have to agree.

You know, we've had four years of argument debate about this here. Itsme you'd love it  :o

i do get where your coming from yes ... you're relying on racism, in order to complete your point.

it doesn't quite measure up and wild accusations do not appease.

free yourself from the bullies of youth and be confident that a simple question is not an intrusion into you victim-hood of past.

  gingerism

A form of discrimination that is considered racism by some. This form of racism is still acceptable by societies standards and is just as wrong as discrimination against Blacks, Asians, Hispanics, Middle easterners. Unfortunatley not much is done to stop this. Red headed children are harrassed at school and even the work place is hostile for red heads.

I can. I love this guy and I know his life and background.

I have no reason to suspect other red haired people have suffered less, and plenty of reason to suspect some suffer more.  I've broken lads off red haired boys in the playground. I've seen the red haired lads become withdrawn and sullen, or argumentative and angry with the world. I have no reason to believe it gets any better in adult life when I see constant, persistent red haired jokes on TV and see the person I love smacked in the head by a stranger with words that say  their reasoning is the hair colour.

If you have red hair you're supposed to laugh and shrug. Which is probably the correct response for 80% of the comments, which face it, are simply made on the back of a society where red hair = joke/funny. But there are still 20% out there who do NOT use red hair as an idle, innocent jaunt, they use is as a reason to take out their hatred.

Unfortunately, for a few people, this is affective and it affects them through life, so that any comment big or small becomes the same big deal.

We know that in abusive relationships, if someone is called fat and ugly often enough, they eventually begin to believe it. If you spend enough of your life being called names, regardless of good intention or intended humour, eventually the people who means it hammer that person down so that all comments and actions are met with the same animosity and hurt.

Why can't you see that something that might have been meant as humour has enough poor merit to be taken in another light? :(

Why did he feel the need to say "OMG A GINGER " or" OMG ARE YOU A GINGER"

you don't even recall with any accuracy what he did say? ... despite "standing your ground" and leveling unfounded accusation ...

BUT I DO KNOW WHAT HE SAID WHICH WAS "OMG A GINGER"

SO like I keep saying as he seen me on cam why the hell did he feel the need to ask the question when he knows what I look like ?
and to me him saying "OMG A GINGER" is not a question

as you've already pointed out, you dont quite recall what he did ASK ... as i have the QUESTION recorded here in front of me, and with its question mark, i do consider it was a question.

But... the undertones of all ginger jokes are those relating to genetics.

You've ignored the rest of what I said.

justify it to yourselves as much as you like, but it does not change the FACTS ... a simple question does not render someone racist ... perhaps those using racism to their own advantage, are the one most guilty in that regard.

Why would someone question something that they can see? It was supposed to be a joke statement, we know that.

The whole debate has become much bigger than that on the back of love-to-vapes response, and the whole question over whether it's actually okay to joke against a minority who are already the butt of jokes... and discrimination that amounts to much, much more than jokes.

You don't usually get beaten up for being taller, shorter, welsher, or gayer than the next man. Actually scrap that, I've seen a welsh guy beaten up at Reading Festival for being welsh years ago and I know gays are still attacked. But really, being welsh is less of a 'crime' than being red haired right now and at least those who are politically correct and broad minded don't attack gays... yeah, its pretty common to call someone gay as a joke and perhaps gays get offended by that, but their backs are covered by political awareness now. The ginger haired guy or lass has no such luck. Its the in-joke by many who don't realise the reality that being ginger haired amounts to much more than the odd joke, it amounts to abuse by a few as I said before.

I do disagree. We are a country built of races. We are racially diverse, we should be proud of it too (but we aren't, we're the opposite). We should not comment on that diversity as the butt of a joke.

That a certain type has no uniform country or identity to belong to doesn't matter, one is still discriminating against a trait or genetic type. Perhaps I cannot use the word race here because they lack that identity but it makes it no less an evil to pick on someone by hair colour or skin colour.

I know Andy,
He is not a racist.
He does not aim to be offensive. But rather likes to have a laugh with the others in chat.
If you cannot take a joke, or have a laugh. Or even mix with people for fear that people talk to you.
Well, it maybe be best for you not mix with other people.
But please do not try to create a drama that does not exist.
please do not be vindictive against a member who asked a question(I have seen the chat transcripts).
Anyways.... I think once you get to know Andy, you will know he is a good lad with a good heart.

WOW :o

The things you miss when you're not able to get into chat

The only comment I will make on this mighty debate is that as a fat, tallish, ginger with a carrot cruncher's accent who went to a rough school and works as a psychiatric nurse I have over the years been on the receiving end of all manner of abuse relating to any number of my physical attributes, hair colour, weight, height, accent etc including being bullied at school. What ever doesn't kill you may not make you stronger, but it will allow you to see the difference between real problems and 'storms in a tea cup'

Chat is a great place to spend time, there are some real quality people in there that I am glad to call friends, I would have suggested that people not take things too seriously, but that ship has sailed.

I for one cannot wait until I am able to get back in there.

@love2vape - you forgot to mention that we also support ethnic cleansing, slavery and apartheid  ::)

there are several ironies about your posts, three in particular that i would like to highlight:-

1. by posting your accusations / issues on a public forum, especially in such a fashion, you have basically now announced to the whole world that you have ginger hair. for someone who gives the impression that they would rather hide the colour of their hair it seems a little contradictory to then bring the fact to such dramatic attention

2. you mention about the abuse and bullying you have sadly experienced just because of the colour of your hair, but i can absolutely guarantee you that whatever abuse / bullying you have experienced in your life pales in comparison if you knew the level of abuse / bullying that emtronea (the person you accuse) has suffered. im not going to go into details of his personal life on a public forum but i will give you one example.
you mentioned how a guy punched you in the street because you had ginger hair which i totally agree is a disgusting thing to do and quite frankly scum like that deserve to be shot. but only a month or so ago emtronea was lured into what is known as a honey trap. he had got talking to a lady and after believing he had made a friend went for a walk with her......she took him to a building where 5 guys were waiting and they then proceeded to beat the sh*t out of him and the reason for it was simply because he was "different" (like i said, im not going to explain his life story on a public forum)

3. from reading the posts in this thread it would appear that the only person being abusive is yourself.........which is the very thing you are complaining about is it not?

now at midnight last night your partner sent me a private message to say that a chat room comment / question of "OMG are you ginger?" had been met with deep offense and that the comment was akin to Nazi like behavior. at that time of the night i would normally be around to respond, but it was the one night of the year when my wife gets drunk so i was occupied with thoughts of taking advantage of her drunken stupor ;)
you could have acknowledged that it was late at night and given me an ample amount of time to respond and deal with the situation but instead you chose to air your grievances on the forum and take it to a completely unnecessary level by posting false and improper allegations of racism. quite frankly, the way you have gone about this does little to make me want to try and see things from your point of view and to make false allegations of racism against forum members is actually an insult to the people who ARE genuine victims of racist abuse!  >:(

and going from a comment / question of "OMG are you ginger?" to accusations of Nazi like behavior goes beyond the ridiculous

the chat room has seen many people with ginger hair.....Funkybunch, Dazz and Rusty are the ones that immediately spring to mind and i can tell you now that most of the time it is those red haired guys who usually make the 1st jokes about having ginger hair!

and as ukric pointed out, just about everyone who uses the chat room goes through a bit of piss taking / banter.......itsmeitis for example has had more than his fair share of short jokes, Nosmo has had plenty of fun poked at him when he comes in drunk, emtronea has received enough "potato?" comments to grow a whole field of them, Wayne has been called Lurch a billion times because of his exaggerated growth spurts and i often get mercilessly ridiculed because of my extreme good looks........i could go on and on and on and on

but the difference is that they all treat it as a bit of banter between friends and never in a million years would anyone say anything if they thought for one second it would cause such offense. now i appreciate that you may have never met emtronea before and are obviously very sensitive to people knowing you have ginger hair (which again makes me perplexed as to why you would post details of your hair colour on a public forum for the whole bleeding world to see!) so may not have taken it as a bit of friendly ribbing, but to take such great offense and respond in the manner you have whilst chucking in false accusations of racist and Nazi like behavior suggests to me that there is nothing anyone can do to rectify the situation and i can only suggest that you no longer use the chat facilities

you treated the comment / question as being the man in the street that punched you........but not everyone in the world has the same mentality / maliciousness as that thug and you need to learn to separate the 2 completely unrelated instances in my opinion. before i had my new teeth fitted i would go through torrents of abuse from strangers every single day, but i could still acknowledge the difference between a bit of banter in a chat room / amongst friends etc when compared to the nasty and spiteful trolls on YouTube / the forums / the street etc etc

and for the record, ive seen you in chat several times now and never even noticed the colour of your hair.......but as a result of your posts i am now fully aware of your hair colour

Seriously, chill out about it, come back n see us. xxx

i take great offence at not being mentioned as the grumpy bald bastard lol

and just to add, if i took offence at everything that was said to me in there i would have never gone back but i do as its just a bit of a laugh.

yep, i've got a bald head and i get called baldylocks

i've been called a lot of things but its just a bit of fun and over the years i've had the piss taken out of me for a lot of things, one being the fact that my top front teeth are missing and one of my closest friends calls me the gummy bear, do i bitch and moan about it, nope.

and as Scoot  :P  mentioned, i didnt notice you were ginger either

one last thing, when he asked "omg a ginger" i actually thought he was talking to me lol

just finished reading this thread and all i can say is...pathetic....it's an adult chat room and the people that use it like a bit of friendly banter, it's called having a laugh....if someone calls you an ugly fecker, you don't cry about it like a little girl, you give as good as you get.....so you're a ginger..who cares?.
if you are bald, ugly, fat, thin, ginger, short, tall, or whatever, you are going to get a good ribbing from me, because it's fun, and it's what happens in life..live with it.....political correctness, dont ya just love it?

So its ok for me calling someone a black bastard then? or other worse words that people call blacks??
have you been put into hospital for the way you look like I have???? I think not
so don't even go there

i've worked on pub and nightclub doors for a few years and been called every name under the sun, even been called a white bastard, do i take offence to it ?, nope, i rise above it and ignore it.

i spent pretty much all of my school life having the piss taken out of me due to my blonde hair and when i say blonde it was pretty much white.

think maybe you need to get over it to be honest.

I've ordered the following for when I am next in chat. I've always made an effort to fit in. With that in mind, I have also booked penis reduction surgery :D

you can only wish you had that much hair lol

i think it best to tell it to your psychiatrist ... perhaps he or she might better understand and better articulate how one simple question does not equal your misconceptions.

you just got ginger hair mate, it's nothing, nothing at all...totally unimportant.....you're not rocky dennis, now he had something to feel sorry about, but did he let it bother him?  did he feck, he just got on with his life, and thats my advise to you mate....oh and stop comparing yourself to a black person who is being racially abused....it's beyond absurd.

At the end of the day....What Emtro said was in Humour...Andy has his very own sense of humour and once you know him you'll know he is a very kind and generous person......When Wolfkitch first came into chat, Emtro said..............'You look like an Ewok with headphones' .  Wolfkitch laughed it off and we explained Emtros humour... maybe if you'd said it had  upset you being asked if you were a Ginger the peeps in chat could have told you that Emtro doesnt mean anything by his comments....He would have even told you himself that he was only joking.....I have spent many nights in chat and I have heard people call each other all sorts of names and ALL have been said in jest.....I have also had the micky taken out of me and I just laugh along with it..... like many people, I have been bullied and I spent many school years in my own Hell....But I grew up and chose to embrace my big nose and sod anyone who didnt like it....Yep...I have a big nose! And now I have just put a great neon sign pointing to it! ..........  ;D

here we go again with the race card being played again ,if my cousin was here he would give you a piece of his mind, you where in chat the other night when cerberus was getting the mickey taken out of him for dying his hair and you sat along side smirked and said nothing ,if you felt so strongly about people getting  verbally attacked whatever there race, color of there hair, how big or small they are,  then you would of said something , something to stop that person from being personally attacked , but you did nothing,to me you are one of those people that moans about getting persecuted but wont stand up to the persecutors and stick up for a fellow person ,and that's the problem with people like yourself, you will kick up a stink about your self, but stand by and watch others  get burned and that is why the problem exist.

playing the race card is dam right  disgusting in my book and a false argument

and you should be ashamed of yourself for suggesting otherwise

if you felt so strongly about your hair , why go on a web cam in a public chat-room where comments will be made  not out of spitefulness, but out of humor and friendliness, and as a ice breaker (may be a bit of a strong one in your eyes) to bring you into conversation with others , i think the problem lies with yourself, you are  the persecutor and probably have done it yourself weather in private or in the public domain to others.
so stop what your doing and have a think about the comments you have made to other people in the past
and you argument will dissipate  into nothing but pure minded childishness

Good day to you sir  >:(

Some of the nicest people I know are ginger  :)
Title: Re: Unnecessary Drama

Some of the nicest people I know are also ginger. Some of the most bullied children I've come across have also been ginger. It's underestimated how constant and persistent comments affect people, whether meant in jest or not.

It often isn't one isolated comment but the culmination of comments over and over than causes anyone to react in what some might consider an extreme manner. To those on the receiving end though, it's not extreme, it's just breaking point.

I know there are a lot of incredibly nice people on here. So does love-to-vape, but he felt that his time here was over and he says thank you to all who have shown empathy.  What this has actually done is a lot of good, believe it or not, but some time in the future you might just hear about that. :)

Enjoy your chat :)
