Title: If a Doctor asked you if you smoke?
Post by: thecaretaker on December 30, 2012, 05:50:28 PM
It has been almost 3 months now, roll-up free. So I wondered....

If a Doctor (Dentist, A&E or other medical professional) asked you if you smoke, what would you say to them?

I think I'd be happy to say NO and still be able to look him in the eye. I might say No, but then add I do vape (but only if pushed).

Would that be dishonest?

What would you say?

the answer would clearly be ... NO

BUT ...

if you feel you would like to trust your doctor to make accurate diagnostics, then it would surely make sense to alert him/her to your vaping habit or nicotine intake.

ALSO ...

you could void any insurance policy by not revealing anything that should be revealed while applying for insurances.

If I am asked if I smoke cigarettes I answer "no" and leave it at that ;)

i don't understand why anyone would seek to mislead or economise on truth to their own Doctor ... ??? ... why not just stay home and not visit him or her in the first place ... ::)

That's a very good point about insurance itsmeitis, something I hadn't considered.

Since switching to vaping, most people (including my parents) assume I've given up smoking and keep congratulating me on my achievement. But in my heart of hearts, I know I haven't and have no intention of giving up. I've just replaced smoking for vaping.

If I see a dr its for a specific reason. I am very cautious about what I put down on the endless stack of forms I always receive at the office. I am open about vaping with my doctors and they have always been very supportive of it - even been allowed to vape in the per surgery and post surgery rooms on several occasions. On the paperwork I am asked if I smoke and I put down NO.

i'm not quite saying that though ... i quit smoking ... but ... i do vape ... to my mind, that makes me a permanent none smoker but still with a drug habit ... that drug being nicotine.

Some insurances in Germany see vaping equal with smoking in their policies.

Some insurances in Germany see vaping equal with smoking in their policies.

could seem ludicrous ... but factor in how some vapers might intend on misleading even their own Doctor, and perhaps insurance companies have their point ... ::)

We should not be expected to connect the dots to the costly insurance companies who ( at least in America ) who try to find any reason to not cover their customers whenever possible. If in their paperwork they asked if I consumed nicotine I would answer "yes" but as long as they ask if smoke my response will be "no".

"anything you think we need to know" kind of has their arse covered ... probably why they entered this crucial all encompassing question as part of the application was due to economical truths of past ...

Its funny you have posted this as I was thinking about the conversation I was having when I went to the hypertension clinic it went like this --

Nurse-  Are you still smoking ?
Me -  Well yes and no I smoke but don't put baccy in my mouth and light it, I use battery and liquid instead ,
 (Quizzical look from nurse) ???
Me - Well I suppose you would call it an e cig
Nurse - Ah so its nicotine replacement so I can put you as non smoker
Me- Well yes with flavouring in.
(Nurse pauses with finger hovering still not sure) You have stopped
Me - Well you tell me have I?
Nurse Ohh I haven't come across this before,I don't know, I have to ask someone, leave that with me.

I thought it was quite funny and I did show her my ego with carto on
I hate to think what she would of thought of the L/t with vivi nova on!!!!
But fair do`s to her she was very interested as she wants her hubby to stop smoking !!! ;D

How can they prosecute when the form simply asks if you smoke? If it said "do you vape" or "do you use any products that contain nicotine" and the person replied "no" then they would have a case for non payment / prosecution.......but if they are only asking whether you "smoke" then the truthful answer would be no.

I've never heard of a case of non payment due to a person answering the questions truthfully :)

When people ask me if I smoke, I just say something along the lines of, "sort of ", lol.

Thing with vaping and smoking though, I guess everyone whilst smoking thinks that they will need to give up eventually. I'am not really sure what to do when it comes to vaping, whether to eventually quit that or not, since no one really knows what harm we are doing to ourselves, just that its better than smoking cigs.

I finally got my life insurance re-newed with a new company after my other one ran out. All of them treat you as a smoker if you use any type of nicotine replacement nowadays but I found one out of hundreds that don't.  You have to be free of any type of nicotine for 12 months before they consider you nicotine free.  It took me months to find it and they are apparently going to change the way they do things soon as well. I'm happy because that's me covered till I'm 70.

Most insurance forms will ask have you smoked in the last 12 or 24 months, so you say yes
but you don’t smoke now
tell your doctor everything that might be relevant, you do still take nicotine, so your doctor needs to know that,  your insurance company never gets access to your medical records, they just ask your doctor relevant questions
ie, has he had a heart attack, has he been diagnosed with cancer, is he defiantly dead.
when i had my heat attact and claimed on critical illness insurance i had to give consent for the hospital to answer the insurance company questions, not sure what happens with life insurance, but your death certificate does include cause of death, and smoking can get you 20 years after you stop.
Father in-laws funeral Wednesday, lung cancer, not smoked for 20 years
Mum died 5 years after stoping smoking

the sooner you stop the better your odds, your first, last fag may have got you, or your next, you just dont know, so dont do it.

Yeah but how honest is anyone and why am I always playing by the rules. Thats what I ask myself on occasion anyway, lol.

Didnt some dood say Sprouts contain nicotine? When your doc asks you if you smoke, are you supposed to say, well not really but I am partial to the odd sprout?

Where does it end  :-[

Its better to tell your doctor something he does not need to know, than not tell him somthing he does need to know, so if you think sprouts may be relivant then tell him, but i would expect him to shine a light in your ear just to see if he can see right through.

i have 2 vaping friends with health issues, 1 is rather large (38 stone), he was told to stop smoking because he was starving his blood of oxygen, (there was a more medical term for this but i dont remember the details, something to do with haemoglobin??), he was smoking 40+ roll ups per day, 2 oz pack of baccy would last him 2 1/2 days, so after the doctors harsh reality call of " give up smoking or expect death in the next 12 months" hes switched to vaping, had a blood test a couple of weeks ago and the blood work is right again, doctors are aware of the vaping and did not pass any judgement on it, only to say as long as you arent smoking.

the other friend has a heart condition,. awaiting bypass op, very similar story really with doctors/nurses reactions.

with vaping being relatively new, long term effects largely unknown, its good to hear things like blood work returning to a "normal" level after switching to vaping

In a typical "healthy person" the nicotine we intake through vaping does not cause any real known harm .... But for people who have already existing cardiac issues or who are pregnant for example the nicotine is an issue and I would communicate that to the Dr. For those people there is always the 0mg (or at least ultra low level) option ;)

the way i see it roll ups were killing me and making me feel so bad i could not work without stoping all the time to rest. if vaping is going to kill me well so be it i feel much better and work without resting all the time now. if a few year from now they say omg vaping is bad for you and your going to die if you do it. lol i was dieing anyway :P

That i would agree with 100%. I used to sell insurance and am sure that vaping wouldn't class you as a smoker. You just need to answer the questions truthfully.

If asked if you still use nicotine then you would say yes. If asked if you use nrt then im sure you could truthfully say no because e-cigs are not nrt.

I went to see my doctor about my health issues. He showed me a graph ,to say i was shocked was an understatement. I was 54% chance of dying of a heart attack with smoking and 34% without.
I thought give up the stinkies cut down on the fat. I went to see him 6 months later and showed him my e-cig and he was happy. I asked him if vaping was ok .He seemed to know a good amount about it and said if it stops you smoking then carry on. He then marked my records as a non smoker. ;D

I went and did a peak flow test and lung capacity test after 8 months of using e-cigs and the doc said my results were remarkable. Followed by "what was it you said you did, electronic cigarettes?"
That was after 8 years smoking, well when I was 14 it was a gimmick but as 15 came around it turned into "get rid of the pack of 20 Richmond before lunch ends" god knows how much I spent on chewing gum and deodorant to mask  the smell from my Mum. Never had any money left for lunch! Anyway waffling on... But yea 8months  after say 7years of 20 fags a day as far as I knew my lung capacity and flow were sound. So the doc engaged in a good conversation about e-cigs. And of course I had to mention ECR.8)

Nice one Ollie......Its good to read that some of the Doc's approve....................... ;D

Now, I was shocked to get a letter from the Surgery today to invite me to their stop smoking cessation program..........I rang them up this morning and said, I've told the Doctor I gave up almost two years ago and its been mentioned a few times....And I said, its obviously not been added to my files, so please make sure it is...I will check when I go to the Doc next week.
