Title: "We have found problems with your computer"
Post by: DirkDampf on December 07, 2012, 12:06:31 PM
I just recived a phone call.On the other end a man with an Indian accent telling me that  they are from Windows and that they have found a problem with my OS Windows
and I should go to my PC and follow some instructions to fix it. They also told me that they have my OS reg.number. So I asked them what OS i have and their answer was Windows 7. Ooops !
I actually have Vista lol. :P
So be aware of such calls. There is some more info about these scam calls here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/jul/18/phone-scam-india-call-centres (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/jul/18/phone-scam-india-call-centres)

or better, keep them tied for as long as possible to the call, so to feck up their intent toward their next victim ... ;)

I had a similar call a couple of months back and did just this. The guy was asking me to go to the control panel etc, so I acted more stupid than usual, told him that my computer had frozen and required a re-boot. Kept him waiting for 5 minutes, then said I couldn't find the control panel icon etc etc.. Had him on the phone for about 20 minutes then said I had to go out and could I call him back.

Never heard from them again.

Keep them on the line and wind them up! They try really hard. Then eventually ask what the Internet is :)

Yeah, that's a classic. Would have thought they would come up with something better by now.

Think they have to file that next to Mo wanting to give you a bajillion squid.

Ive had these phone calls I just tell him to f##k off !!

a quick "f##k off" only saves them time and affirms our own lack of interest ... a lengthy call on the other hand, costs them dearest. ;)

I shall do that next time he's rang twice in the last couple of months and he also rang a couple of times last year. The reason I tell him to f off is coz they nark me off just as much as ppi calls. I will take the time next time and keep him talking for as long as I can.  ;)

according to the guardian......In the same way, it costs them virtually nothing to make the calls because the international part of the call goes via the Internet.
so it would seem that making them waste their time isn't really costing them anything.

I have lots of fun by pretending im not good with computers and that im struggling to find the start button / Windows button they want me to press.......after 5 or 10 minutes I say "is it because I'm on a Mac that I can't find it?"

I usually follow it up by saying "now jog on ya mug!" Lol :P

the idea isn't to cost them the price of the phone call, its the price of an unproductive twenty to thirty minutes ... they probably find less than one occasional sucker in more than every hundred calls if that ...
each "f##k off" means they waste themselves less than a minute ... whatever their intent, twenty to thirty wasted minutes equates to a same amount of lost opportunities.

same works too for doorstep callers ... simply allow them in, sit them comfortably down and nip to the loo, while upstairs, detour into the bedroom and watch a good bit of telly.
at the point at which you believe they are about to leave, simply make a renewed presence as if distracted by speaking on the phone ... have them resettle and relax before scarpering again ...

by the time you come back, you tell them the phone call was important and you are now compelled to nip out ... hey presto, they are so bemused they never will come trying to sell you "the watchtower" ever again. ;)

cant agree with that mate...it means they are controlling your life for the time you are putting on a pantomime just to get some sort of revenge......
better just to tell them to **** off and get on with what you were doing before they invaded your space...lol

Or just invite them in GED and immediately start showing them e cigs and explaining all the intricacies of batteries and various juices - bet they will be gone before ya get deep into VG and PG bases :P

they aren't controlling anything ... granted they first invaded our space, but thats the point at which their control ended and the invasion instantly becomes ours to take ... i get more fun from placing them on hold, misleading them and whatever else springs to mind at the time ... telling them to "f##k off" only reveals how they didn't gather their initial objective, but at least they caused us anger ...

i would happily do this ... i might not describe the devices quite as legal though as i'd hope they'd either crapped themselves or run off with a false call to the authorities. :P

They use vnc services to control your computer, then scour it for info. They're not after payment

The computer owner is directed to a website and told to download a program that hands over remote control of the computer, and the caller "installs" various "fixes" for the problem. And then it's time to pay a fee: £185 for a "subscription" to the "preventative service".

its in the guardian artical dirk posted.

Afaik the majority of times in this type of scam they're looking more for information to use later than a fix fee

well they are a bunch of amateurs then...they should take a page out of the Nigerians book and just offer the victim a few million quid in exchange for bank account details....seems to have done the trick so far....I'm still waiting for mine though...lol

This sort of approach would be fun -

Would need a bit of adapting, but could work.

My approach to door to door salesmen is quite different:-

1. Open door
2. See clipboard
3. Say "not interested"
4. Close door
5. Carry on with whatever i was doing

With the old door to door salesman selling PVC windows, I use to try selling them the windows at trade price. That use to really get them confused. ???

i wish i'd get a call like that.... i'd fire up a virtual windows box on my linux laptop for them to log into and try and log back into their machine over the vnc connection they make; or at least log everything they're doing and report it.

I got the Call today!
Said they were from British Telecom, Which is who i use for Broadband.
Knew my name also.
Said that they had noticed a lot of Traffic that was unusual and was sign of being infected.
Then brought me to the WINDOWS log FILE in Comp MAnagement.
Asking me to highlight the System Errors to prove i was infected.
I PLAYED ALONG THE WHOLE TIME to delay them from trying attack others.
Then then came to the punchline saying it was cost £119 to fix my computer.
I said NO. Then, it became a HAGGLE... They went down to as little as £5.
The Final 'No' led to a half hour waste of time for them before they hung up in anger!  :-X

Next time I get the call I am going to say that I have a ZX Spectrum.

Or maybe make up a computer and operating system, like a Bastardotron Z5600 running the GIT OS (Global Information Technology Operating System). Lets see if they can fix that.
