Title: A new way to wick the oddyseus
Post by: Capt12B on July 19, 2012, 04:48:25 PM
After being plagued with harsh hits from my ody, I've come up with a new way to set the wick the dramatically improved my ody's performance. I did this impromptu vid showing this method. Apologize the vid is not as polished as the current standard but it was a 1st take and I have no ability to edit vids on my iPad.....so here it is and may be worth trying out if you have an ody ;D

My kingdom for a coffee stirer? :)

Will try this later if I can find something suitable, thanks Capt :)

Great vid Capt. Have you tried the new ceramics yet? Would we still need the coffee stirrer with those?

Cheers

I have a stash of old ceramics so doubt I will be getting the new ones but honestly the mod worked fin without the coffee stirrer - just added it as a insulator to be safe :)

I notice you use the stepped large mode bit, any reason?

I originally used the proper raised mouth piece but mine seemed to be slightly off as it wouldn't sit centered ever so slightly but the stepped one seems perfect. I'm sure I sacrifice a slight bit of capacity but no biggy as I carry a pocket full of juice.  Also, I was having issues with my juice running right through the ody in large mode but not in short mode- had me so frustrated but when I switched to the step the issue went away.  The ody rocks but there has been times when it was seriously trying my patience grrrrr. All good ATM though ;D

You're made of money you Julian... I was thinking one of those thin red straws that come with kids carton drinks might do the trick?

Scott's method of doubling up the wick works smashingly on my Penelope.  Check out his Ody review (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kZVFOA-X7c#ws) starting about 12m 10s.  Except, instead of cutting off two lengths of wick before fitting to the cup and then cutting off the excess, I use the cup to measure where I need to cut.

OP, I'm curious whether this coffee stirrer method affects the Ody / Penny's resistance to leaking and flooding.  Have you noticed any liquid where it shouldn't be?  Do you have to pay attention to keeping your PV upright?

I apologize if this was addressed in the video but I missed it.  I'm trying not to wake a sleeping baby, so I'm watching more than listening.  I'll have to come back and pay proper attention to this when I'm at work tomorrow.

I have had no liquid leaking any wear it shouldn't be with the way I am doing it now.  I think the dbl wicks do a good job of blocking the channels & keeps the juice up in the tank :) I never stand my ody up - it spends it's time supine when not in use ;)

Cracking vid Capt. Very well explained. I'll give it a try at some point but haven't had any problems with the old way as yet.

Yup,many stopped going down the channels with the wicks and somehow,it works.

An alternative to the plastic stirrer could be glass beads found on fleabay, they sell a bag of 1000 for peanuts (I use them in my genesis setups to cover up the lenght that are between the contacts and the mesh, seems to quench the fire that makes hot spots)
