Ribbon and rope problems
« on: February 23, 2014, 08:44:01 AM »

Anyone know what I might be doing wrong with this?

I'm trying to build a u-wick in an aga-t2 using steel rope and ribbon. I just can't for the life of me sort out the coils though - like in the pic it seems to be only the top two wraps that are combusting the juice. I wondered a few things - whether the wick holes not being insulated is a problem? Not getting contact on all the coils around the rope? But I've wrapped it about 6 times now and it looks ok to the eye but still having the same problem. I'm just **** at wrapping coils? (Don't answer that one)

I also ended up with about 6 or 7 wraps as I was getting really low resistance like 0.6 and 0.7 ohms otherwise!

If anyone's got any tips or suggestions I'd be really grateful. Cheers all  ;D

ss rope is a real git to oxidize I have used the rope a couple of times but always wrap a little mesh around iit and oxidize that then wrap a coil around it. If you cut the mesh at 45 degree angle  it will be easier to bend without kinking.

I have no experience on this at all, but I was reminded of a vid that Scott did a while back to address issues on Genesis mesh wicks, the fag paper method -

It may be of use.

Good luck

+1to what the funky one said, try wrapping some mesh round your rope wick.

Thanks guys I'll give that a go. Cheers for that video too Stew I remembered it from ages ago but would have never found it again lol I think I'll try the rizla and then the mesh and see how that goes

I just wondered - has anyone done a micro coil with ribbon? I wondered if coiling it so that all the wraps of ribbon touched might do the same thing as a wire micro coil but better? I'm a bit shattered tonight but will have an experiment in the week

Thanks for the ideas all much appreciated. I'll hopefully report back with a sorted out atty in a day or two

P.S. still cracks me up how Scott says stuff like "I'll just wrap a quick coil" and then it works perfectly first time. Jeez....  ;D

There was a you tube video, I forget who made it, showing how to make a "tin man"  where each turn of ribbon overlapped the previous one. From what I remember it seemed to work pretty well using a cotton wick on a dripper. Can't see why it wouldn't work on an aga, using a rope wick wrapped in mesh.
I have a ribbon set  up like a micro coil on a dripper and it works very nicely using cotton wicks. Tried it with silica but I seem to get wicking issues with it (maybe the silica is a bit too thick)
Ive got an aga that  isn't being used at the moment,  so I might  have a go at a  ribbon micro coil on a rope wick later, ill let you know how it goes.
