Micro coils are imho easy and the place to be. Just jump in I'm sure you'll love em.

Cotton wool is cotton wool. Pharmacy,  supermarket etc. A little goes a long way. Just buy the 100% natural stuff.

not tried micro coils yet, awaiting dripper from FT then get some wire from LF and maybe give them a go, got nothing to lose.

I dunno about that. I've lost about 5m of .3 wire on micro coils so far. But I've got a FT blow torch coming in soon so I'm sure I'll be wasting a lot more soon  :D

10m of kanthal was around 2 quid on vapemesh. Not too bad. Will order bigger rolls once I know which gauges  I'll use the most
