where the entire coil glows, that is as it should be if dry ... a hot spot is more common with metallic wicks as used in genesis types, and usually refers to only a small area of the entire coil.

have a look at Scotts review/tutorial ... at 8:25 you'll see the coil glow ... this is as a perfect coil should.

also, your wick is very unlikely to burn ... these types of wick will normally tolerate sustained period of intense heat, even from a blow torch ... if you do feel your wick has gathered a taint, you could probably achieve best result from subjecting it to a flame, preferably an intense one ... this way you'll burn off any contamination and be left with a perfectly functional and clean wick.

itsmeitis, thanks for your patience :)

The one from my first post looked exactly like scotts, as a1laserboy had the exact same problem but is now running fine, I'm obviously still doing the coil too tight

Will keep at it, hopefully getting it right in the next 2 goes or I'll have to wait for mondays post.

New 2mm fibre glass wick and more .2 Kanthal wire arrived this morning. The liquid soaked sera that was in the chamber had been tainted with the previous attempts smelling a bit funny so that went in the bin and everything else had a good wash.

The kanthal wire seems a bit easier to make a coil with, ended up making a 5 wrap coil over a folded piece of wick but it was still small enough to fit between the posts. As per first attempt and the video, added some drops to the wick and fired it up and like all the other previous times it stunk. Allowed all the eliquid to burn off to get the coils glowing and they were all even. Kept firing and looking under a magnifying glass to ensure the coil was good nothing was touching where it shouldn't and it all looked fine.

I noticed that the amount of foul smelling smoke was diminishing the more I fired it so just kept doing it over and over until it eventually stopped, filled the filler up with eliquid, put everything together, took a deep breath and started vaping.

Success  :P

So it seems likely that all my previous attempts were probably ok, and it just required burning off whatever crud is on the wick.

As to the device itself, vapour production is excellent, flavour is a little lacking at the moment but it is improving the more I use it and it looks good on the zmax
