Premade Coil Wires for ODY and Penelope
« on: July 07, 2012, 06:37:23 AM »

My curiosity on the use of the new premade coil wires is peaking.
First I should say I think they are a great idea, and would like to see them in packs of 10 for a very reasonable fee.

With that, I should say that when i received my ODY, i tossed the premade wire and had to make my own, if for no other reason than just to make it myself.  However, when I received Penelope I figured I would give the premade a try.  It made 5 or 6 wraps around the 3mm wick, which seemed to be too many, but the gauge of the wire may be thinner...the bummer is that as soon as i made the last wrap-around the NR wire broke at the point it was forged with the R wire.  So, I never got to actually try it.

So, I was going to make it a poll, (may still do just that), because I am curious to hearing if there is any other of the same stories with the wire assemble separating or if it was just me; and it is understood that they are just shipping now so i am curious to see how it rolls out over the next month or so.

Golden Greek sold them in packs of 5 for all of 17 seconds lastnight for £2.50 :)
I had no problems with my ready wire but I've heard of a couple breaking.
I thought it was super long at first but it ended up reading 1.6ohms.

Worked out about 7 or 8 I think :)
Both my wires measure 1.6ohms so I guess they are all the same?

how bout links in the US?  ;D

I want to make some more wires and get some practice. So far I know I will need this for my Resistance wire.

What should I look for though for a NR wire.
Been  searching around and I am just getting overwhelmed with what wires I should get.

What are the wires that the Penelope come with? I watched Imeo's video about him discussing what his premade wires were, but the sound kept cracking and I could not make out what they were.

Heya Dhred,

I registered an account just to answer your question.  You're welcome.  :)

Anyway, http://www.twistedjewels.com/999-Fine-Silver-Wire_c36.htm looks like a good place to order silver wire.  I haven't ordered from there yet, but I intend to in a couple of weeks unless I come across something better.

Me too.  But as far as resistance wire goes, I've read that Kanthal is easier to work with than Nichrome -- less springy or something, IIRC.  I use it on my Geneses and it's easy enough to work with after running it over a flame to, what's the correct term?  Season it?  Tan it?  Oxidize it?  Prepare it, in any case.  I got a 32 gauge (0.20mm) spool of more Kanthal-A1 than I'll ever use in my life for like $6 on eBay shipped.  I don't see any on eBay at the moment.  I'm looking for something comparable, but so far all I've been able to find out is that everyone in the U.S. seems to be sold out.  There's a guy from resistancewire.com who will be emailing me an estimate of when more is expected in stock, and what the minimum order is.  I'm thinking about either organizing a co-op or reselling it on ebay or something if the minimum order isn't prohibitively expensive.

I decided to go with Imeo's recommendation and buy from where everybody buy's which is @ wire.co.uk. I bought them here just to be sure I am getting the right stuff. Even says on the website that people buy it to make wires for their Ody & Penelope's.

Nichrome and Kanthal are resistance wire.  The .999 silver wire is no resistance.

Just found some Kanthal on Ebay. This the right stuff?
Kanthal D - 0,20 mm  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kanthal-D-0-20-mm-10-m-Draht-Heizdraht-42-1-ohm-m-/280748212594?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item415de5c172#ht_587wt_1189

The stuff I have is about 45 ohms / meter resistance.  That stuff you linked appears to be pretty close.  I don't know whether the material is of any concern.  It could be more brittle or misbehave in some other way, or it could be a perfect replacement.  I guess just make sure it doesn't contain lead or mercury and let us know how it works for you.  :)

edited.  The McMaster-Carr stuff is pure danger.  See this comment for a better answer.  Sorry about that.
