Vari voltage box mod... kinda
« on: September 12, 2011, 01:17:54 AM »
Ok so as I mentioned in the other thread I mad myself a box mod this weekend.  Instead of using a usb connection for the power I used a variable voltage power pack I had laying around to run straight from the the plug socket. After reading other peoples experiences and worries regarding possible USB burn outs I thought it would make sense to just not bother with it and try some direct inject...

Excuse my camera, its ****. :)

The power pack was similar to this: http://www.110220volts.com/SS116.html Cheap as chips and Im sure a lot of you may have one of these gathering dust somewhere.

The voltages that are available on the one I have that we are interested in are 3v 4.5v 6v 7.5v and 9v. Other packs are available that have different voltages on such as 5v.

Vapes really nice on 6v and 7.5v. 8)

That is very clever using a direct supply which also makes it variable to different voltages. Best thing about it its a direct supply good for home use no need to charge batteries. Great MOD hope your enjoying it and thanks for sharing it with us :)

Thx chaps, glad you liked it.  :D

I should mention after just checking the voltages at the connection, I do seem to be getting some odd readings that I haven't quite sussed out yet.

The readings are:
3v is giving 4.7
4.5v is giving 6.7
6v is giving 8.7
7.5 is giving 10.7
9v is giving 12.9

I compared this to my 3.7v ego batt and was getting 3.4v which I seem to recall is quite common but does seem to imply the readings I am getting are correct.

That said 8.7v (6v)sounds very high but to be honest the experience seems fine and certainly not overly hot, and for the record nor does 10.7v (7.5v).
Weird huh.

ATM I'm not sure if this is normal or maybe my pack is just a bit rubbish. Anyone with a bit of electrical knowledge feel free to chip in.

That is indeed very weird, other thing which makes it even more odd your ego battery reading 3.4v that shows your voltmeter is working hhmm plus everything is running smooth its not getting too either this is odd.

Lol.. Indeed...  :o Not only that when vaping at 3v there is no vape what so ever, and at 4.5v gives light vapour, 6v vapes like 3.7 and 7.5 plenty of vape and actually seems like the sweet spot I expected from 5v, that said 9v and 12v are fine as well.  :P

It kinda suggests that the power pack is right and my multimeter maybe wrong...  :-\

Yea thx Shah, why let some facts get in the way of an opinion anyway...  :D
Still considering the price of the Vari's and even TW's new vari booster is £50  :-X then this has been a great and very cheap alternative.

Absolutely Correct its an cheaper alternative to have a go, good way to work the mind while making.
TW booster would make the devise longer than you would want.
